This wild species comes from NW Yunnan and grows there at an altitude of 4000 m in moist, stony meadows. In this country, Rh. russatum is suitable for rock and heather gardens with moist and cool substrates. It blooms in mid-May with terminal deep purple-blue flowers. The upper side of the leaf is dark green, the underside is rusty brown. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, 2.5 cm long and 1 cm wide. Rh. russatum is evergreen and hardy. After 10 years the height is 50 cm, the width is 60 cm. The final size is 150 cm high and 200 cm wide.
